Geeky Valentine’s Day

by @geekgirls

Geeks are unlike most people. We value intellectual conversations, appreciate a virtual challenge on a console, and take pride in inventive activities that are outside the norm. Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, rather than handing over your hard-earned dough on a fancy-schmancy dinner, here are a few creative ways to spend the day instead: (more…)

Geek Girls Network Year in Review

Wow what a year it has been! And to think, this all started out as a Twitter account.

For those of you who may not know, before blogging was even a thought I created a Twitter account in early March 2009 as a way to share news about geeky things topics of interest.

I originally titled the Twitter account @geekgirls (plural) for myself and a friend of mine to use, but unfortunately she wasn’t interested at the time. Instead of changing the name to singular or to another name entirely, I decided just to go with it.

Within a month, I found hundreds of awesome people, most of whom were other geek ladies. I felt I could offer so much more than a few tech tweets a day and wanted a way for us to be more connected. I decided to create a blog not only for myself, but for any woman who wanted to share her geeky expertise. @G33kGurrl gave me the perfect name for the site and the response was overwhelming. Soon after the launch, 6 talented women began contributing, the network was mentioned in a Geek Dad post, I was interviewed by Seattle Geekly, and featured on The Science Channel website as Geek of the Week.

After a few weeks of battling PHP, I finally launch the official Geek Girls Network site in August. This site has provided over 100 articles from 17 contributors, contests, breaking news, a live Twitter RPG, interviews of amazing women, and even our own promo video from Think Hero! And although the articles are written by women, there have been tons of geekguys that have helped in promoting and supporting our events and efforts including; @thepeterpixie, @aboynamedart, @igeektrooper, @Zeblue_Prime, @daytonward, @jpuent, @gcrecords, @GeekStuffOG, and countless others!

I can’t thank you all enough for all your support! Take a look back at some of the highlights of 2009:
