Review: Pride Prejudice & Zombies

By @SaraDion

pride prejudice and zombiesWhen I first heard that this book existed, I was ecstatic. I had recently finished reading the original Pride and Prejudice, and marveled at the genius of whoever thought up the idea of integrating violent zombie mayhem into the novel. As I was soon to find out, this genius goes by the name of Seth Grahame-Smith and, to my knowledge, he had never previously published anything in his life. Next time I was in Borders, I picked up a copy in the Humor section, and just the cover art got me laughing!

A girl in typical 19th century getup, with all the frills and lace, plus rotting flesh and lots of blood. And it was all uphill from there. This book is HILARIOUS. I mean, out of all the books in the world, I can’t think of one that would be made funnier by the presence of zombies the way that Pride and Prejudice is. It’s a 19th century chick flick, for goodness sake (more…)

My Zombie Affection

by @geekgirls

night of the living deadI have been in love with zombies since the very first scene of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Well, maybe not so much “in love” as fascinated. The idea of an apocalypse caused by an uncontrollable disease which turns humans against one another is a frighteningly probable scenario. Aside from the fantastic gore that accompanies zombie films, the story of human struggle and eventual decay of social structure is far more interesting. Many zombie stories have lasted in my memories because of the horror they instilled or because of the amazing theoretical examination of human nature in the most traumatic catastrophe imaginable. When order, security, and basic necessities are removed from a culture and replaced with chaos and fear, the result is truly horrifying. (more…)

GGN Zombie Week(s)!

GGN ZOMIE WEEK(s) kicks off on October 19th 2009!

Zombies are a big part of the geek pop culture. Practically every geek I have ever met has at least a minute affection for the fictional brain-eating anomalies. Maybe we love them because zombies are the most probably horror scenario. Maybe we love them because of the gore, violence, and sheer chaos they cause. Or maybe we love them, because we secretly wish for a zombie apocalypse just so we have a reason not to show up for work on Monday.

In honor of zombie fandom, GGN will be providing blog posts, links, news, events, videos and prizes! Here’s an overview of awesomeness to expect: (more…)

Interview: Black Cherry Bombshells

Web comic presence has been steadily increasing over the last few years. From the many online comics that have come and gone, one in particular is withstanding the competition….and blowing its freakin brains out!

The Black Cherry Bombshells is a web comic about a band of kick-ass chicks surviving in a zombie apocalypse. The colors are vibrant, the artistry is unique, and the story line gets better every issue.
Right before Comic-con ‘09, I had the honor of interviewing the talent behind the girl-on-zombie violence: Sacha Borisich (artist), Johnny Zito and Tony Trov (writers).

Geek Girls Network: Since the members of BCB are geographically spread, how did everyone meet?

TT Johnny and I grew up together.  Now we’re roommates/writing partners/french onion soup enthusiasts.

JZ We met Sacha online on the now defunct ComicJobz.com.  We had all the same influences and hit it off right away.

SB It was a great place to meet people who wanted to write and draw comics. Tony and John posted an add for a zombie girl gang comic. They expressed their ideas and we hit it off well.

Everything they liked I liked in turn so we had good work chemistry pretty much from the beginning.

TT However, we all finally met in person this past November. We all got together in New York and toured the DC offices.

JZ – We’re going to see Sacha again at San Diego Comic Con.  She lives in LA so we’re the ones making the commute this time.

TT And colorist/letterer John Dallaire lives a few blocks away from us here in Philly.  We get to hang out all the time.
