Interview: Nancy Lyons & Meghan Wilker of Geek Girls Guide

Awhile back I was having the most confusing occurrences with my Twitter account. Every so often, I would receive praise for an article that I didn’t write. Turns out the wonderful @geekgirls that people were referring to was Nancy Lyons and Meghan Wilker.

Back in 2008, this amazing pair of women launched the Geek Girls Guide as a place to publish their perspective on the Interactive industry and demystify technology for non-technical audiences. Their mission is to make web technology accessible and exciting through education, creating opportunities for women and men in software and web development to socialize and network, and advocating for audiences at software and web industry events.

Nancy Lyons, President and CEO of Clockwork Active Media Systems, is a passionate Geek Girl and technology evangelist, bringing the Clockwork culture of accessible technology and user-centered business solutions to the masses. She has been preaching the good word about technology and culture for the last 15 years, since her days as President of pioneering Minneapolis-based ISP and interactive shop, Bitstream Underground. Known for her innovative thinking, her humor and her no-nonsense way of delivering complex messages, Nancy has been named a Woman to Watch by the Business Journal.

Meghan Wilker has been managing director at Clockwork Active Media Systems since 2006. She’s known for her attention to detail, her keen understanding of interactive strategy, her knack for cutting to the chase and getting things done with a smile. Meghan made her shift to interactive media around 2000, when she left marketing firm Gage to join Bitstream Underground as a senior project manager. She eventually held positions at major Twin Cities-area advertising firms, including Martin|Williams Advertising and Colle+McVoy. She is a strong advocate for making technology more accessible to people, especially women.

I had the pleasure of breaking their concentration for a moment to pick their brain about their company and perspective of the technology industry.

Its all about the girl gamers: Frag Dolls

cross posted on fragdolls.com

E3 time always brings with it a webload of exciting announcements. We thought that this year, we’d like to kick-off the E3 news with our own fabulous announcement. We’ve been dropping hints for the past week that this announcement was coming, and in the theme of hints, we have more to drop about another E3-related announcement later this week (#E3Drum anyone? Keep an eye on @fragdolls). But for now, here’s one last teaser for our big Frag Doll Announcement:

Yep, it’s exactly what it looks like: we hired two new Frag Dolls! If you’re curious how we managed this without a Casting Call, please keep reading through to the end. I have explanations and even more good news to follow, but before getting to that I’d like to introduce the cute girls in that drawing. Meet Glitch (left) and Siren (right)!

You may recognize Glitch, otherwise known as sarabellum or Sarah Oliver, from her previous involvement as a finalist from our 2009 Casting Call, a member of the first Cadette class, and long-time Frag Doll community regular. We’ve come to know Sarah as a tireless gamer geek, talented troll charmer, and exceptional artist (see above cute drawing). We love her style so much that we decided to bring her onto the team in hopes that her cool will rub off on the rest of us.

We got to know Siren, otherwise called xHOODLUMGIRLSx or Krystal Herring, through her time spent as a semi-finalist in the 2009 Casting Call and an esteemed member of the first Cadette class. From our earliest encounters with Siren she has proven herself a highly motivated competitive FPS player. Her accomplishments include membership on the PMS Clan Halo 3 team that finished Top 5 in the 2008 WCG Nationals. We’ve also seen her apply remarkable shooter talent and outstanding teamwork to games like Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and Modern Warfare 2. On top of her mad gaming skills, she has demonstrated through her event work as Cadette that the leadership ability and professionalism that she’s honed as a manager for M.A.C. cosmetics will make her an invaluable asset during our gaming events.

The First-Ever G(irls)20 Summit in Toronto

Toronto, Ontario Canada, May 4, 2010 —This June in Toronto, just before the leaders of the world’s most powerful nations gather there for the G20 meetings, there will be another historic event – the first-ever G(irls) 20 Summit.

Modelled after the G20, The G(irls)20 Summit will bring together one girl from each of the 20 countries from June 15th to 18th to discuss how girls and women can help solve some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Girls and women as catalysts for economic progress
Research has shown that girls and women have the potential to play an important role in building economies.  For every dollar a woman earns, she invests 80 cents in her family and her community (compared to 30 cents by men).  According to Larry Summers, former chief economist with the World Bank, “Investment in girls’ education may well be the highest-return investment available in the developing world.” A recent study revealed that C$3 billion could be added to the economy of Kenya alone, if the country educated its girls to secondary school level.

“There are 3.3 billion girls and women in this world.  The potential for each to contribute to their communities and their countries, and indeed our planet, is great,” said Belinda Stronach, founder of the Belinda Stronach Foundation.  “Sadly for so many, the challenges they face in realizing that potential are much, much greater.  So our goal is to give the world’s girls a platform to change minds, change lives and – quite literally – change the world by showing the importance of supporting girls and women everywhere.
