Why @MariBiscuits Loves GGN

by @maribiscuits

As a girl who is into plenty of nerdy stuff I have been been active online for many years, but only recently have I felt like part of a growing network of geeky girls. This is partly thanks to twitter, but mostly due to Geek Girls Network™ and it’s enthusiastic (and of course geeky) creator, @geekgirls (Kristin).

I have made female online friends before, but I had never before encountered a platform that was so welcoming and comfortable for girls who are geeks.
It’s too easy for the female minority to get drowned out on mostly male forums, as it can prove hard to be yourself when constantly confronted with either requests to post you boobs or outright abuse.
The other option was girly forums, which are well.. girly. Great if you want to talk about fashion, weddings, babies.. or whatever it is normal chicks talk about… but for those of us with traditionally “boyish” hobbies nothing could be more nightmarish.

chicken follow fridayThe hash tag follow friday started as a way to recommend friends to other people in your Twitter network. Since Twitter is all about value and valuable connections, I highly suggest that you participate in this every week to gain new relevant followers.

Avoiding Twitter Spam

by @geekgirls

twitter spamSpammers and bots attempt to infiltrate every space on the World Wide Web and Twitter is no exception. Due to the simplistic design of Twitter, however, spammers are easy to spot and avoid.

Identify

· The user has no picture or bio and is following many (500+)
· The user is following many people and has many followers, but has never posted a tweet
· The user tweets in intervals of 5-10 tweets, seconds apart, a few times a day (probably a bot)
· The user name is made up of seemingly random numbers and letters (Ex. Lor52Uw01)
· The link posted in their bio goes to a site that doesn’t have anything to do with their bio
· The tweets are never directed @anyone in particular
· Your new followers all have similar bios, like “Surviving the Economy” or “Loving Life”
· The user has an explicit avatar and has only one tweet with a link (and we all know where that link goes ;) )

What to do

Ask. Send a tweet to the user in question asking what the deal is. Some people just haven’t had a chance to post an avatar or write their bio yet.

Don’t Follow Back. If the user doesn’t seem like too much trouble, or if you really can’t determine if they have a spamming agenda, then just don’t follow them back.

Block ‘Em. If the tweets are eating up your feed with useless info or if the user just makes you feel kinda icky, then block them. Blocking prevents the user from sending you tweets and direct messages.

Report ‘Em. If it appears that you’re being stalked by the same spammers over and over, report their suspicious activity. Follow @spam and send them a Direct Message (DM) to report the spammer account.

Do no RT @spam messages either. Just report the username. Otherwise, you might accidentally get suspended along with the spammer account!

Get a Mazillion Followers a Day (equals spam!)

Watch out for tweets promising to get you hundreds of new followers. Most of these websites have you logon with your Twitter ID and Password and then use your account to send out spam tweets on your behalf.

Before giving up your information, READ the terms of service. Usually the rules state that your account will be used to send out “promotional” tweets. If there are no terms of service or rules on the website, then don’t even bother signing up.

Twitter Lingo

by @geekgirls

chicken tweetTwitter users are driving the language used within the site to compensate for the 140 character limitation. Listed below are some definitions to help you tweet like an expert.

Tweet: Twitter asks the question “What are you doing?” Your not so literally answer in 140 characters or less is called a tweet.

Tweeps: These are your Twitter friends. Also known as tweeple, peeps, you get the idea. (more…)

New Twitter RT (retweet) Button

by @geekgirls

UPDATE: Twitter’s New RT (retweet) feature has been disabled. According to http://status.twitter.com as of November 11th 2009:

We’re working on a few problems related to the ongoing rollout. These should be resolved quickly and it will be back on for those who had the Retweet feature previously. And we’ll then continue the incremental rollout of this feature to everyone.

Earlier this evening, along with the help of TONS of my peeps, I was able to test the new automatic RT (re-tweet) button on Twitter.

In your feed, there is a new clickable button next to the Reply button. Click the twitter retweet Retweet and the tweet will automatically be retweeted. It appears that the new RT feature has not rolled out for everyone just yet, so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see it when you log in.

To make this short and sweet, here’s the skinny on the new automatic RT button: (more…)
