SDCC Recap: Geek Girls Exist Panel

by @geekgirls

It’s truly unbelievable what can be accomplished with a little confidence, a bit of motivation, and Twitter!

For those of you who haven’t heard how this came about, my friend Jill (aka @thenerdybird) announced that she would be on a panel Where Are All the Action Chicks this year at the San Diego Comic-Con and while I was so happy for her I also wanted to be part of a panel, or better yet, moderate an panel.

I immediately emailed Comic-Con to inquiry how one goes about pitching and securing a panel for 2010. They instructed me to email my pitch, I did, and they got back to me a few weeks later with my room number and date and time of my panel. (This is where I passed out from overwhelming excitement)

Knowing that I had less than a week to gather panelists, I teamed up with @GeekGirlDiva who graciously offered her assistance and support of my new exciting project. In one week’s time, we had 8 amazing women who were willing to join the panel and who represented the wide spectrum of geek culture; everything from TV to comics to gaming.  (more…)

E3 Wrap-Up from All Things FanGirl

cross posted @ AllThingsFangirl.com

Eruditechick and Loquaciousmuse here, with our final thoughts on all things E3 2010. We tried out all of the new products from Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft and a slew of soon to be released games. Other highlights included meeting some of our favorite Tweeps, running into a nice lady from Rockstar Games who offered to send us Outlaw to the End shirts, and the Scott Pilgrim Kegger. Oh and coming into possession of a giant Sims 3 bean bag chair. That was all kinds of awesome. Enjoy our wrap up and see you next year!

Favorites:

EC: Fable III. Rock Band 3. Nintendo 3DS. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. So I guess it was a spectacularly girly year for me at E3. I played just about everything I could get my hands on, and of those playable experiences, I took the aforementioned four away as my favorites of the convention.

Muse: Fable III, Rock Band 3, Nintendo 3DS, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Green Day Rock Band (yes I know it’s out already), Your Shape for the Kinect

World Science Festival Opening Gala Performance Recap

by @geekgirls

world science festival

Beyond anything I could have imagined this event was incredible as it was inspiring. Some of the most gifted minds and most talented performers gathered to honor a man so powerfully brilliant that he not only defies an incurable disease, but also continues challenges our ideas of space and time.

stephen w hawkingStanding next to reporters from ABS, CBS and The Post, this was a truly overwhelming experience and one that I can consider as the first official major event covered by GGN. Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the live blog feed. Due to internet service in Lincoln Center, I wasn’t able to share the event in its entirety. So without further adieu:

As the late afternoon sun rays peered through the grand glass windows of Alice Tully Hall, the anticipation of the evening became increasingly exciting. (more…)

MoMa exhibits Tim Burton’s Incredible Imagination

cross posted on thenerdybird.com

Tim Burton is his name. Madness is his game. I was one of the 810,500 visitors who helped make Burton’s retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York CIty their third most visited exhibit ever behind Pablo Picasso and Henry Matisse. This from the man who attached Sarah Jessicca Parker’s head to a chihuahua’s body. I love our culture.

You’re greeted in pure Burton fashion as you must walk through a giant, gaping mouth to get into the exhibit. The hallway you walk down is long and striped and reminded me greatly of Beetlejuice (even though the image is based on a sketch of Burton’s). After viewing his Stainboy shorts there you enter a blacklit room that holds what looks like an oversized mobile for a very, very disturbed child. Perhaps Burton himself? (more…)

National Library Week

cross posted on Occassional Rants and Raves by @ms_tinamarie

(Although I am a little late is getting this up, it’s still a really important post that deserves all your geeky attention)

It’s National Library Week! Libraries are near and dear to me (and it’s not just b/c I am a librarian!), libraries fuel our communities more than most realize. There’s a bunch of evidence to show that libraries are vital and essential, yet library budgets around the country are being slashed.

Need more reasons to support libraries? (more…)
