This year, the International San Diego Comic-Con will be unlike any other in the event’s 40 year run. That’s because this year, GGN along with some amazing geek girls have planned 2 of the biggest events:
Geek Girls & Friends Tweet-Up
and the very first…
Geek Girls Exist Comic-Con Panel!!!
Both events should prove not only to be a blast, but also a huge statement to the hundred thousand attendees and press alike that geek girls are real and friggin rock! Here’s all the details:
Geek Girls & Friends Tweet-Up
Join the biggest Geek Tweet-Up event of all time on Friday, July 23rd from 8pm-11pm at Jolt ‘N Joes (Gaslamp location) in San Diego.
Hosted by @geekgirls, @thenerdybird, and @geekgirldiva, this Tweet-Up is sure to be even bigger and better than NYC!
During the convention, we will all be busy waiting in lines, getting autographs, attending panels, waiting for bathrooms, and squeeeing over all that is awesome that time to meet those you have been friends with online and across the globe often takes a serious back seat. This Tweet-Up will be the perfect opportunity to hang out with friends you have made online and hopefully make some new friends.
DETAILS:
- The Tweet-Up will be held Friday, July 23rd from 8pm-11pm at Jolt ‘N Joes.
- The VIP room holds about 200 people, so please RSVP on the FB Events Page.
- Alcohol will be served, so no one under 21 can come (sorry). Everyone is responsible for their own drinks and food.
- DJ Spins will be provided by @aboynamedart (co-host of Hour42)
- There will be geek flavored movies, a must sign guest book, and more surprises to come!
SPONSORS:
We are looking for sponsorship for this event, and due to overwhelming requests we encourage you to act soon. Please contact info@geekgirlsnetwork.com for more information on becoming a sponsor.
We hope to see you there! And special thanks to @ArkhamAsylumDoc for being our geek angel in arranging this awesome venue!
Geek Girls Exist Comic-Con Panel
Inspired a @geekgirldiva post, GGN will be hosting the very first "Geek Girls Exist" Panel for the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con! The focus of this panel is to promote "geek girls" in a positive manner and dispel the rumors that females only attend cons because their boyfriends dragged them or because they just want to dress in a Slave Leia costume.
The panel consists of women who represent different aspects of the geek culture and who have embraced their geekiness in their personal and/or professional lives. I will moderate the panel to discuss topics such as “when did you realize you were a geek,” “when did you decide to embrace it,” “what would you offer aspiring young females in your profession/interest,” as well as encourage anecdotes about embarrassing moments when their “geek got in the way.”
DETAILS:
The panel will be held Thursday July 22 from 5:30pm-6:30pm in Room 8.
Check out the amazing list of panelists (so far):
- Morgan Romine founder of Ubisoft’s all-girl gaming team The Frag Dolls
- Bonnie Burton author of You Can Draw Star Wars and Girls Against Girls
- Marian Call musician inspired by Firefly/Serenity and Battlestar Galactica with her album "Got to Fly"
- Sarah Kuhn author of One Con Glory
- Jill Pantozzi writer for MTV Splash Page, Newsarama, Has Boobs Reads Comics blog, and Heartless Doll
- Veronica Belmont technology and gaming-centric video host of Qore and Tekzilla
- Kiala Kazebee writer for io9, the SFWeekly, GeekWeek, and featured extra in Felicia Day’s The Guild
There is more to come so RSVP to the FB Events Page!
You may now begin to SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Oh they both sound like amazing events. Wish I was able to attend. But I’m sure you gals will have full coverage throughout. So I’ll be able to be there in spirit.
Because there weren’t enough things about SDCC to make me sad that I’m a starving artist in Australia, there’s a panel with @GeekGirlDiva, @TheNerdyBird, @Veronica NAD @Mariancall… >.< son of a…

This sounds like fun. I don’t know that I’d fit in the “girl” category, considering I just hit the big 5-0. I have been a geek girl since I was 14 and turned into a rabid fan of the original Star Trek (in was in syndication even that long ago). I’m going to Comic-Con with my 23-year-old son for the second time. I get tired of the assumption that we’re all “fanboys,” when I’m anything but! I was a Star Wars fan when I was 17, then as time passed and more and more awesome shows were created, I became a fan of X-Files, Buffy, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and now Vampire Diaries and Supernatural. I tell my son he doesn’t realize how good he has it–when I was his age, we were lucky to have one TV show and maybe two movies to look forward to, and the SFX were laughably bad. Still, I loved it!

I’m going to bring my 9 year old daughter Serena by to see that it’s ok for girls to like comics and other “geeky” things. I can tell that she’s self conscious sometimes when her favorite things draw weird looks from her school friends.
Comic Con is one of her favorite times of the year, she said it’s so fun to “geek out” for a week.
See you guys there!
Robert -I applaud your awesome Dad skills in supporting your geeky daughter and helping have confidence! Fantastic!!
