On November 15th, I co-hosted Hour42 with Peter Pixie. Although we had 2 minor technical fails, the show was a hit! We talked about how girls get into geekdom and what they do when they get there, our special guest the Action Flick Chick herself, Katrina (aka @actionchick) talked about being on G4’s Woman of the Web contest, and much more! Check it out:
Special thanks to @katiedoyle, @davidmanly & @FyrGurl for staying up late to support my first attempt at internet radio – you guys RAWK ♥ And thanks again to my boys @Hour42 (@thepeterpixie & @aboynamedart) for letting me sub in!
Due to time constraints, I wasn’t able to share all of my suggestions to help guys help their noobie girlfriends acclimate to the world of comics, so here goes:
1.Look for subjects that are of interest in other mediums. For example, if you like reading sci-fi novels about vampires, try looking for a graphic novel about vampires.
2.
Look for favorite writers, artists, or even comedians to see if they have tried their talents in comics. Example: One of my favorite comedians, Brian Posehn, wrote a hilarious holiday hit called The Last Christmas.)
3. Not all Spideys are created equal. Keep in mind that one hero can have many different stories told by many different artists and writers. Example: I was never a big fan of many of the Spiderman series, but I love The Amazing Spiderman: Brand New Day series.
4. What looks appealing: Sometimes I’ve bought comics just because I was fascinated with the cover art and have found a few gems along the way.
5. Pick up the graphic novel of a super-hero movie you liked. Example: One of my favorite movies growing up was Ghost World. The book offers so much for to the story and characters and I really appreciated seeing the original writer’s vision.
6. If you’re too timid to venture into a comic shop by your lonesome, check out web comics. For a long time, there was no comic book shop anywhere within reasonable driving distance from my house (OMG – I know!). So I spent a few hours a week reading web comics that filled the void. Some of my favorites include Crtl + Alt + Del, Girls with Slingshots, Girl Genius, Black Cherry Bombshells, and Sam & Fuzzy.
Oh, and by the way, if you do venture into a comic shop alone, I promise the employees will be MORE than happy to help you find whatever you need!
7. Go to CONS! Comic book conventions are a great way to see the writers and artist up close and get their personal view on their own creations. It’s way more fun to ask a writer what their comic is about than read a printed descriptions of it anyway. Plus, many of the cons have some of the coolest indie gems you would never find on the shelves!
Tell me how you got into comics or how your boyfriend/girlfriend helped you find your fandom:
